“Upholding all things by the word of His power…” (Hebrews 1:3), the Son of God sustains the world and all in it. He limits the centrifugal forces that would spin the universe into infinity, and restrains the centripetal powers that would collapse everything into nothing. By Him the atom holds together; by Him the galaxies spin in their dazzling array. He is the fount of life, and the essential “file” of information in each cell. All human thought and logic finds its reason and order in Him, all speech reflects Him as the original Word. All love derives from Him; all righteousness reflects His own justice. By Him “kings reign, and rulers decree justice” (Proverbs 8:15). The wind and the waves obey His voice, and every winged creature follows His leading through the trackless sky. God’s revelation centers upon Christ, the eternal Word, the fulfillment of the Law, the express image of God’s person (John 1:1; Romans 13:4; Hebrews 1:3). All human relationships depend upon Him, for He alone gives reason, speech, memory, and will. Apart from Him there is no life, for in Him is life, and this life is the light of men (John 1:4). Indeed, He is now our very life (Colossians 3:4). May our thoughts and feelings, words and actions, all find their vital center in Jesus, the Son of God who became a man to save us from our sins.
