“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:25-26).
Dear Praying Friends:
When our family, friends, finances and flesh fail us, we may feel utterly bereft, but we are not. God is with us always, to uphold us, guide us, and lead us toward eternal glory (73:23-24). He will strengthen us, and he will be our “portion” – that is, the fulfillment of all his promises to us in Christ, and that without end.
So, we can and should draw near to him daily through his Word and our prayers, and put our entire hope and trust in him alone. He is enough, and he will never fail us.
Thank you for praying last week. Though I was slowed down by some sort of virus, the Lord enabled me to finish notes on Titus, transcribe and edit a story for the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Christianity, and make excellent progress on the article about Roland Allen and a review of Richard Cook’s Darkest Before the Dawn: A Brief History of the Rise of Christianity in China, which is part of our GCC series, Studies in Chinese Christianity.
Maybe I should remind you why I write these book reviews. In 2010, when I was lecturing at a university in China, I asked the Dean of the History Department what, if anything, I could do to help him and his colleagues. His reply came immediately: “Read books in English on Christianity in China, and write detailed summaries of them, with your critical comments. That will help us to stay up to date with the scholarship and also to know which books to try to obtain with our limited resources.”
“I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works” (Psalm 73:28).
Yours in his faithfulness,
Wright
