“Out of the depths I have cried to you O LORD; Lord, hear my voice!” (Psalm 130:1).
Dear Praying Friends:
We all find ourselves in “the depths” at one time or another, and sometimes we seem to live in them.
The depths of distress, when troubles surround us; of disappointment, when hopes and prayers find no answer. Of defeat, when we have not stood against temptation. Of discouragement, when our efforts constantly fail. Of doubt, when God’s words seem unreliable and anxiety simply overwhelms us. Of despondency, when sorrow and sadness overtake us. Of desolation, when we lose a loved one.
All these are bad enough, but what the psalmist speaks of here are the depths of his own depravity – his iniquities and sins. When we catch even a tiny glimpse of the depth and breadth of our innate self-love, distrust of God, and flagrant disobedience of his righteous laws, we are undone.
But the psalmist does not lose heart or hope. No, he cries out to God in humble supplication, trusting in the Lord’s forgiveness (4), mercy (7), and redemption (7-8). And he exhorts us to wait for the Lord and hope in him, for he will not fail us.
“O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption" (Psalm 130:7).
Yours in his limitless love,
Wright
