“To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust. . . Turn to me, and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive my sins” (Psalm 25:1-2a, 16-18).
Dear Praying Friends:
As usual, David is in trouble. On the outside, his many foes hate him violently and seek his life. On the inside, his grievous sins weigh him down with a burden of guilt and shame.
To make things worse, he is all alone, with no one to help.
So, what does he do? He doesn’t shut down in self-pity, or lash out at the Lord. He turns to God, pouring out his heart in lament, confession, and fervent prayer. More importantly, he trusts in God to vindicate him, guide him, forgive him, and deliver him.
Once again, we can see Jesus in this psalm. He, too, faced many who hated him and sought to kill him. He, too, was terribly lonely and afflicted beyond imagination. Though he was entirely without sin and totally innocent, yet he took our guilt upon himself. As a result, he willingly suffered the terrible wrath of God.
Finally, however, God delivered his soul from ultimate death, plucking him out of the tomb. Thus, God redeemed Israel - his people- from all their troubles (22).
“My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for he will pluck my feet out of the net” (Psalm 25:15).
Yours in a certain salvation,
Wright
