Christ is Our Life

“You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).

“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your [or, our] life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:3-4).

What does it mean that Christ is our life? Here in Auburn, I discussed this with my brother Peter and his son Jonathan yesterday, because Peter’s pastor had preached on this verse in church. Some thoughts:

He shows us the pathway to life, by leading us to himself and thus to God the Father. Adam’s sin plunged us into the death of separation from God, but Christ’s death brought us back to friendship with God, with whom is the fountain of life (Psalm 36:9). The resurrection of Christ brings his followers with him into newness of life with God, and ensures that we will enjoy this life forever (Ephesians 1:19-2:7; John 17:3).

Jesus is the bread of life, the source, sustenance, and substance of all that truly satisfies. Feeding on him by faith, we enjoy love, joy, peace, hope, and we do so abundantly, like those who participated in the overflowing feast he provided in the wilderness (John 6:1-14, 26-40, 53-58).

Jesus gives us the water of life, the Holy Spirit, who refreshes us daily as we trust in the saving work of Christ for us (John 4:10, 13; 7:37-39). And much more!

Yours in his endless life,

Wright
